Glossary
Terms used across the Breakthrough
- Engineered bamboo
- Bamboo processed into laminated or composite structural products such as beams, panels, flooring and cladding.
- Culm
- The jointed stem of a bamboo plant. Mature culms are selectively harvested above ground, leaving the rhizome intact.
- Rhizome
- The underground root system from which new bamboo culms regenerate after harvest.
- Clumping species
- Bamboo species that grow in tight clusters and expand slowly, as distinct from running species.
- NCC
- National Construction Code — Australia's performance-based code for building and plumbing.
- Deemed-to-satisfy (DtS)
- Prescriptive NCC provisions accepted as complying with the Code's performance requirements.
- Performance solution
- An alternative compliance pathway demonstrating that a material or system meets NCC performance requirements.
- AC162
- International Code Council Acceptance Criteria for structural bamboo.
- EPD
- Environmental Product Declaration — verified, standardised reporting of a product's environmental impact.
- LCA
- Life Cycle Assessment — assessment of environmental impact from production to disposal.
- Dynamic LCA
- Life cycle assessment that accounts for the timing of carbon flows, better suited to short-rotation crops.
- ACCU
- Australian Carbon Credit Unit.
- BFCQ
- Bamboo Forest Carbon Quantification — a proposed Australian carbon method for bamboo.
- INBAR
- International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation.
- CLBT
- Cross-laminated bamboo-timber — a hybrid engineered product.
